Sulphur Springs grocery store to reopen

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – Nearly two months following the closing of Piggly Wiggly in Sulphur Springs, the grocery business will reopen under new ownership.

The Sulphur Springs News Telegram reports the store will be the only Piggly Wiggly franchise open in Texas, owned by Jimmy Whittington, his wife Donna, and son Matthew.

The store is currently being renovated and will reopen on August 12.

The store closed in May, after owner Affiliated Foods Southwest, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The four other Piggly Wigglys in Texas were also closed.

A few positions reportedly remained unfilled. About 30 people lost their jobs when the store closed in May. Jason York will serve as the new manager. York previously worked at Tom Thumb and Kroger stores in Dallas.

Upon word of the closing in May, then Store Manager Bobby McClure told KETR he felt there was a market for a grocery store in north Sulphur Springs and expected someone to reopen it. It turns out McClure was right.

The Sulphur Springs' Piggly Wiggly was built in the 1950's.
