Sulphur Springs PD release '08 crime stats

Sulphur Springs – The Sulphur Springs Police Department has released its crime statistics for the 2008 calendar year.

Figures show a 13 percent increase in offenses when compared to 2007. There were 251 "Part One" crimes reported last year. "Part One" crimes include homicides, forcible rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, thefts and automobile thefts.

The number of assaults in Sulphur Springs shot up from 21 in 2007 to 39 last year, while the number of thefts and automobile thefts reported were slightly lower than the previous year.

There were seven forcible rapes recorded in the City last year, and five in 2007. 12 robberies were reported in 2008, while there were only three in 2007. Police responded to 79 burglaries in 2008 and 70 the year before.

There were no homicides reported last year, and hadn't been since 2005 until last Saturday. As of Monday, Jerry Chadwick Clayton, of Sulphur Springs, remained in custody at the Hopkins County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder in the alleged death of his grandmother. Bond has been set at $1 million.
