Sulphur Springs' Piggly Wiggly to close

By Scott Harvey

Sulphur Springs – The parent company of the grocery chain Piggly Wiggly has filed for bankruptcy, forcing the closure of several stores, including Sulphur Springs.

Affiliated Foods, based in Little Rock, Arkansas filed for bankruptcy last week. As a result, approximately 25 people will lose their jobs in Sulphur Springs, along with dozens more in Clarksville, Denton and Stephenville.

"They called us and told us to mark everything down 30% Saturday," says Bobby McClure, store manager of Piggly Wiggly in Sulphur Springs. "We have until [May] 30 to get rid of it."

Affiliated Foods had a buyer for the company lined up, but they backed out of the deal last Thursday, according to McClure. McClure feels there's still a good chance something new will fill the void.

"There is certainly a market for a grocery store right here where this is. I think somebody will open it up."

The Piggly Wiggly in Sulphur Springs was built in the 1950's, and is currently the only full service grocery store on the north side of town.
