Suspect returned to local custody

A Rains County man was released from a Dallas hospital this week, after being severely wounded when he was shot during an attempted break-in at a residence on New Year’s Day.

But after Syrus Elmo Hurst of Point was discharged from Parkland Hospital, he was placed into the custody of the Hunt County Jail. A state district judge Monday ordered an arrest warrant for Hurst following the string of reported incidents early Thursday morning.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said Hurst was still listed in critical condition Monday morning and had expected him to be released by the end of this week.

But a check Monday evening revealed Hurst had been returned to the jail, where he was being held without bond.

The Hunt County District Attorney’s Office had filed a motion Monday with the 196th District Court, asking to have Hurst’s existing $300,000 bond on an intoxication assault charge declared insufficient. Judge Andrew Bench issued the arrest warrant and set no new bond.

The incidents reportedly began early on the morning of Dec. 31 with a disturbance call at a residence on County 3318. Occupants of the home said Hurst showed and claimed to have shot and killed someone at his residence, then began firing an AR-15 rifle. The caller said the occupants of the home were able to wrestle the weapon away from Hurst, with no one being hurt.

Meeks said investigators found no evidence of Hurst having shot anyone.

Hurst was said to have departed the scene and later was reported to be doing donuts outside of a fireworks stand near Lone Oak. The owner of the stand who lived in an adjacent house told Hurst to leave. Hurst was said to have left the scene and then returned a short time later, attempting to break into the residence.

The homeowner fired a blast from a shotgun through the door, and Hurst then drove away from the location.

The sheriff’s office later found Hurst has been involved in an accident in Lone Oak, suffering from a wound to the chest.

Hurst has trial scheduled in the 196th District Court Feb. 9 on a charge of intoxication assault. He has pleaded not guilty to allegations he was driving while intoxicated when he caused an injury accident four years ago.
