Commerce – 18-year old Russell Luttes is hoping to get more young people involved in politics by running for Commerce City Council Place 4. Luttes is a sophomore from Mt. Pleasant majoring in political science at Texas A&M University-Commerce and is also a member of the University's Honor's College. Luttes says if elected he wants to focus on improving the city's parks, both by beatifying and getting them in compliance with the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. He also addressed improving streets in Commerce by seeking funds through state grants.

Luttes says he's impressed with the current city council's ability to work together and make progress and would like to be a part of that team. He also gave credit to the city's Police Department, noting their strong crime prevention division.

Filing deadline for the May 10 general elections, which includes City Council Place 2 and 4 plus city Mayor is March 10. All council seats are at large.
