Tragedy at Greenville High School

By Bill Oliver/Kevin Jefferies

Greenville, TX – Greenville Police responded about a quarter after 7 to the high school following the report of a 16 year old white male shooting himself in the band room. A school nurse and a student services officer administered CPR. The victim was transported by ambulance to Presbyterian Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted at the Medical Examiner's office in Dallas.

No other students were injured in the band hall. The Greenville Herald-Banner reported the rush to pick up students afterwards resulted in a car crash in front of the school in which one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Over 100 parents immediately drove to the high school to pick up their children.

No further details on the shooting are available from Greenville Police or the school district. A statement on the greenvilleisd.org website stated additional counseling staff and youth ministers have been made available and was on campus, and neighboring crisis intervention teams are available if necessary.

The GISD statement also said their thoughts, prayers, and concerns are with the student's immediate family as well as his extended school family.
