Transportation funding problems in Texas

By Kevin Jefferies

Commerce – The Northeast Texas Regional Mobility Council sponsored a conference Friday at A&M-Commerce to discuss looming funding problems for transportation in Texas. Texas Transportation Commission Chair Ric Williamson said there's an $86 billion difference between needed projects and available funding.

Officials do believe need can be met, however, by using all available federal and state funding, empowering local and regional transportation leaders, increasing competitive pressure to control costs, and looking for looking for other solutions, such as rail systems or toll roads.

Public Hearings covering the Trans-Texas Corridor will be held throughout North Texas in July. Dates next month for some area meetings are July 10th in Sherman; July 12th in Paris; July 17th in Greenville; and July 19th in Terrell.
