Trial for heroin smuggler

A California man is scheduled to go on trial for carrying more than two pounds of heroin in his shoes.Marcos Lopez Higuera of Banning, California may also be planning to enter a guilty plea to the indictment provided he can be found and brought back to local custody in time. The jury trial is set to begin today on one count of possession of a controlled substance. Higuera was indicted by the Hunt County Grand Jury in 2011, where he entered a not guilty plea but indicated in court records earlier this month that he intended to plead guilty, adding that his attorneys and the Hunt County District Attorney’s Office were in the process of working out a plea bargain arrangement. But in March, 196th District Court Judge Steve Tittle forfeited Higuera’s bond and set the new bond at eighty thousand dollars. A new warrant for Higuera’s arrest was ordered Thursday.
