Two A&M-Commerce students die in car wreck

By Kevin Jefferies/Brad Kellar

Commerce – Two A&M-Commerce students were killed and one was injured Sunday in a vehicle accident on Interstate 30 in Royse City. 22 year old Rachel Rollings was driving a '98 Ford Explorer eastbound on I-30 when the vehicle was hit head-on by a small trailer carrying a car that had been traveling westbound. 51 year old Margot Alvarado of Michigan was driving a moving van pulling the trailer that became unhitched from the van. It crossed the median and hit the Explorer's left front fender. According to witnesses, the Explorer became airborne and eventually came to rest on its roof.

Rollings was killed on impact. 20 year old Britney Lipsey of Celeste was asleep in the back seat when the accident occurred. She was taken by LifeStar to Parkland Hospital of Dallas where she later died. 19 year old Ashley Bates of Commerce survived the accident with some laceration and was released from Baylor yesterday morning.

Officials say all three were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. Police are investigating to determine if the trailer was properly attached to the van and if Alvarado will receive any citations.
