Two firefighters treated after battling Wednesday blaze

By Scott Harvey

Peerless – One person has been cited for violating the Hopkins County burn ban after a Wednesday afternoon fire charred the side of the general store in Peerless.

Hopkins County, North Hopkins, Cumby, Miller Grove and Tira volunteer fire departments responded to the grass and brush fire behind the Peerless Assembly of God Church on Spur 71.

A large metal storage building and an old barn were burned down, and power lines were damaged. Two firefighters were treated on the scene for heat related injuries. The local Red Cross provided rehab to the firefighters battling the blaze.

The fire rekindled at about 5:35 p.m. and then again at about 6:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
