By Kevin Jefferies

Texas – TXU Electric Delivery and Current Communications Group have entered into an agreement that will ultimately provide internet service through electric lines. The Smart Grid technology will also allow TXU to check meters remotely and locate problem in electric service quicker, according to TXU Electric Delivery chairman and CEO Tom Baker. Baker said TXU Delivery covers the from the Red River south to Austin and from Midland east to Tyler, but did not give exact areas where the new Smart Grid service would first be available.

Current Communications Group is the nation's leading provider of broadband over power line service, or BPL. Current Group plans to design, build, and operate the BPL network, including the Smart Grid. The network will be capable of bringing homes and businesses high-speed broadband and wireless services, including voice, video, and Internet services, over existing electrical lines.
