FORT WORTH - Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service indicate that as many as 15 tornadoes may have developed in various parts of the region Tuesday afternoon.
All together, a total of 55 severe thunderstorm warnings and 18 tornado warnings were issued by the Fort Worth office between 7:32 a.m. and 8:13 p.m. that day.
The storms are blamed on an upper level low and a cold front clashing with a very warm and very unstable air mass.
As many as six tornadoes struck the Metroplex, with several others spotted near Campbell, Cumby, Lone Oak, Pickton, Royse City, Sulphur Springs and Quinlan. An EF-4 is said to have struck the City of Forney and in Rockwall County.
Hundreds of flights were cancelled Wednesday out of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. As of Wednesday afternoon, Oncor had restored power to a majority of customers, with reports indicated that as little as a few hundred people were still in the dark. No fatalities were reported from the storms.
