Veterans Day ceremonies scheduled locally

A series of events are planned Friday at local entities and schools to honor the men and women of the United States military for Veterans Day.

At 9 a.m. Friday at the Cooper High School gymnasium, the school will be hosting “Students Honoring Our Veterans.” The event will be followed by the American Legion Red Henderson Post 483 Memorial Service, honoring America’s fallen soldiers, at 11 a.m. on the south lawn of the Delta County Courthouse.

In Greenville, Hunt County officials hosted an official Veterans Day observance Thursday morning. On Friday at 9:30 a.m., the Greenville ISD will present a Veterans Day program at the High School gymnasium. Following the ceremony, veterans are invited to a free lunch in their honor presented by the Culinary Arts Department. All veterans will also receive a free commemorative shirt for the occasion.

Paris Junior College will hold a special observance at 11 a.m. in the DeShong Chapel on campus. The PJC Chamber Singers will present a series of performances, including “America the Beautiful” and “Bring Him Home.” The program also features a reading of the names of Paris Junior College students who lost their lives during wartime to preserve our freedom. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial on campus by current students who are military veterans.

Then on Saturday, the Veterans USA Show in Paris runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Love Civic Center Pavilion at 2025 S. Collegiate Drive. Bob Hope Impersonator Bill Johnson from Las Vegas will be master of ceremonies and the Victory Belles from the World War II Museum in New Orleans will be entertaining the troops in song and dance. Texas and Oklahoma school children will be on stage to present their money collected during the Pennies for Patriots campaign. 30,000 pennies buy an engraved paver, which will make up the walkway of the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial, currently under construction. The Choctaw Youth Dancers will also perform.
