Volleyball Lions finish 4th; LSC tourney to start Thursday

Senior right side hitter Kayla Bond and the Lions will travel to Canyon for the LSC tournament on Thursday.

A&M-Commerce was the last team to get a shot at West Texas A&M and prevent the Lady Buffs from completing the 2013 LSC season undefeated but the Lions could not close out set one and dropped the next two to the Lady Buffs. A&M-Commerce finishes 2013 fourth in the LSC standings with their 9-7 record.

The Lions will face Tarleton State in the first round of the LSC Tournament in Canyon on Thursday.

Kayla Bond led the Lions in kills with 11 in her last game at The Field House. Bond was efficient to get those 11 kills with a .409 hitting percentage.

Ezon Onditi was also in double figure kills for the Lions with 10 on the night. Michaela Spicer led the Lions defensively with 16 digs. Li'i Etimani was just behind Spicer with 15 digs of her own. Jordan Neal recorded another double-double in her final regular season game at The Field House. Neal posted 29 assists and 11 digs for her 15th of the season.

After the Lions took a 3-2 lead off an Onditi kill the Lady Buffs reeled off four straight to take a 6-3 lead. The Lions then battled back to tie the first set at nine thanks to a kill from Amy Davault.

West Texas then took the lead back and extended it to 14-11 after back-to-back Lion attack errors. The Lions then scored the five straight points after Craig Case took a timeout. The run featured three kills from Onditi and after the Lions took a 16-14 lead the Lady Buffs took a timeout of their own.

West Texas eventually tied the set up at 19 then saw the Lions score three straight to take a 22-19 lead before the Lady Buffs called their last timeout. After the timeout West Texas scored the final six points of the set to win 25-22.

The second set was tightly contested but the Lions were never able to get the lead after tying the set at 13 and 14. The Lions got the deficit to 17-15 after a kill from Breanne Snyder but West Texas would then respond with an 8-1 run to take the set 25-16 and take a commanding two sets to none lead.

In set three the Lady Buffs got out to a 9-4 lead with the help of two different three nothing scoring runs. Two kills from Davault and a West Texas error got the Lions even at 11. West Texas then responded to get their advantage back to four at 17-13. The Lady Buffs then closed the match on a four nothing run to take set 25-17. 

A&M-Commerce now turns its attention to the conference tournament and a first round match-up with the TexAnns of Tarleton State in Canyon, Texas on the campus of West Texas A&M. The two teams split the season series with each team winning on their home courts.
