Weather may not be only factor in grass fires

Hunt County Fire Marshall Richard Hill believes at least some of the local grass fires are due to criminal activity, mainly copper thieves.

In an address to the Hunt County Commissioners Court Monday, Hill said copper and wire thieves may be causing the fires when attempting to burn away the insulation from the wiring before they try and sell to a recycler. That had Judge John Horn considering whether to implement a restriction much like their Collin County neighbors, which restricts recycling centers from accepting burned wiring.

A 200 acre fire Friday along the Hunt/Rockwall County line is blamed on someone using a cutting torch.
