GREENVILLE - Additional cases of people infected with West Nile virus have been reported in Hunt County, including a Greenville child.
The Hunt County Health Department confirmed Monday that four cases have been reported, but no deaths. A 4-year-old boy reportedly spent a week in the hospital due to the virus, with complications from meningitis and encephalitis.
Residents are urged to use mosquito repellant when outdoors during peak biting times and to remove any standing water from your property.
The Texas Department of State Health Services reports that most people infected with West Nile won’t experience any symptoms, while 1 in 150 of those infected could experience severe symptoms.
Last week, state health official Shelley Stonecipher told KETR the peak time for contracting West Nile in Texas runs through mid August, noting current indicators are that the state will exceed 500 cases of the virus in humans, a record.
