West Niles hits horses

By Kevin Jefferies

Hunt County – An unusual number of cases of the animal form of the West Nile Virus has been seen in horses in Hunt County recently. A veterinarian at the Greenville Animal Hospital says eight cases have been seen in the past three weeks. The virus is spread from birds to animals or humans by mosquitoes. Bird migration and rainfall that may have increased the mosquito population could be causes for the high number of cases.

From July to October, four cases of the virus have been reported in humans in Hunt County, none of which have been fatalities.
