Wet January

By Kevin Jefferies

Hunt County – After two years of drought in Northeast Texas, 2007 is off to a very wet start. More than six inches of rain has fallen this month, which is the most locally since 1949. The chance for rain continues this week, which may put this January in the top 5 wettest starts to a new year on record.

6.15 inches of rain has been recorded for January at Majors Field Municipal Airport in Greenville, the official monitoring site for the National Weather Service. That makes this January the sixth wettest on record.

The most rain for January was in 1932, when 9.13 inches fell.

4.5 inches of rain have fallen in Commerce this month.
