Woman in fair condition following accident

By Scott Harvey

Commerce – A Commerce woman remained in fair condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas Tuesday, after being hit by a vehicle Friday night.

A driver was reportedly traveling east on Culver Street and in the process of changing lanes when he noticed the woman crossing the street, swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting her.

The woman, identified as Telena Sirom, was flown by air ambulance to Parkland. She was reportedly, along with her two children, attempting to cross the street where it intersects Park. None of the other individuals with her were involved in the accident. Sirom is said to have suffered injuries to her head, pelvis and knee. The driver, identified as John Smith, did not immediately require medical treatment, but was said to be pretty shook up.

Police are investigating the crash, and are working to determine the speed of the vehicle at the time of the incident. Commerce Police Chief Kerry Crews says they do not believe the vehicle was traveling faster than the posted speed limit, and also indicated the location of the accident wasn't very well lit.

Police do not suspect any negligence in the case, and are ruling it an accident only.
