Womans hit cow on road

By Kevin Jefferies

Rains County – An Edgewood mother and her infant are ok after hitting a cow Sunday night. The collision occurred along Highway 19 near the Rains and Van Zandt county line. Jennifer Daugherty and her 11 month old son Jace were heading to their home in Edgewood when they struck a cow that had wandered on to the roadway. The collision severely damage the 2004 Cavalier she was driving, causing significant damage to the front end and crushing most of the roof of the car.

Both were flown to Tyler by helicopter. Jace had been secured in the back seat of the car and was treated and released with minor cuts. Daugherty underwent reconstructive surgery for severe lacerations on her face, and was released Monday.

DPS troopers say that livestock are more likely to be on the roadways under current drought conditions. They have eaten all the grass in the pastures, and are wandering roadways looking for food.
