Wreck kills one during Tuesday's gridlock on I-30

By Scott Harvey

Greenville – A fatality accident along Interstate 30 yesterday occurred as traffic began to bunch up due to a standoff just up the road.

65-year-old Jerry Garner, of Royse City, was killed after crashing into an 18-wheeler that had stopped in traffic.

At that time, Greenville authorities were attempting to detain a man at the Wesley Street/Exit 93 Bridge, who had allegedly threatened to jump, forcing the closure of the Interstate's east and westbound main lanes.

The traffic jam began at approximately 8:15 a.m. The unidentified subject was detained nearly five hours later and transported to a hospital. Traffic was diverted onto the east and westbound service roads until the situation was resolved at around 1:15 p.m.

Jerry Garner was pronounced dead after being transported to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

It was not immediately clear whether the individual who prompted the standoff and subsequent traffic jam would face criminal charges in connection with the fatal crash.
