Lori Cope, executive director of CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) of Hunt County says a case in neighboring Collin County of children in a custody case who tested positive for methamphetamine and cocaine is not unusual.

Lori Cope, the director of CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) of Hunt County, says April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.  Lori says the number of child abuse cases and children in foster care in Hunt County has increased from about 140 at this time last year to nearly 200 today.  CASA provides volunteers who monitor children in foster care and advocate for them in court.

Lori Cope, the executive director of CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) of Hunt County, says the organization is receiving 2.3 new cases per week in 2017 and the number of children now being represented in  foster-care cases is now more than 200. Lori says parental drug abuse is involved in more than 90 percent of the cases.

Lori Cope, director of the Court-Appointed Special Advocates of Hunt County (CASA), says the number of cases on CASA's agenda has increased from 145 on April 1 to 186 as of May 6.  CASA volunteers represent children in foster care during court proceedings.  She says increasing pressure on Child Protective Services (CPS) is adding to CASA's  caselist.  And so, she says CASA is in urgent need of more volunteers.
