Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says an improvement project at Commerce Municipal Airport is expected to begin around July 1.  The project includes repairs to the runway, and the installation of runway lights that can be controlled by incoming pilots.  The city has a grant for the project from the Texas Department of Transportation.  The mayor says the city hopes to get another grant in the near future to extend the runway so that jets can land at the airport, located on Highway 50 north of Commerce.

Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says the long-running city street improvement project is nearing its completion, with the last phase on West Neal Street south of the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus well underway.  The mayor says the dedication of a memorial at the Gen. Claire Chennault house on Monroe Street has been delayed until March, when TAMU System Chancellor John Sharp can attend.  And Mayor Ballotti says a Mexican restaurant is preparing to open in the downtown building most recently occupied by Buck's Barbecue.

Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says the contractor for the street improvement project is being fined $1,000 per day for not completing the project by the end of August.  The mayor says he expects all street improvements in the current phase of street repairs will be complete by the end of the year.

Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says it appears that city of Commerce taxes will remain the same for 2014-15.  The mayor credits City Manager Marc Clayton for good fiscal management in avoiding a tax hike.  Dr. Ballotti also discusses what he considers a successful arrangement that allowed Commerce citizens to use the A&M-Commerce Morris Recreation Center and its swimming pool over the summer, and the status of the street repair program.

Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says ground breaking should take place soon on a new CVS Pharmacy on State Highway 24/50 near Whitley Hall, the Texas A&M University-Commerce high-rise dormitory.  Already underway near the same location is construction of the new Hunt Regional Healthcare emergency-care facility.

Commerce Mayor Dr. John Ballotti says, now that the state has cleared the way, long-awaited work on paving Monroe Street north of Live Oak is beginning.  And the mayor says the work is progressing on the Black Angus Grill, a steak restaurant going into the former Mi Casita location in the Live Oak Street shopping center.

Commerce mayor Dr. John Ballotti discusses details of the arrangement for citizens of Commerce to use the pool at the Morris Recreation Center on the Texas A&M University-Commerce campus this summer.  The mayor says the future of the municipal pool at City Park is doubtful, but it's unlikely the pool can be repaired.
