Sulphur Springs to close swimming pool

SULPHUR SPRINGS – Due to a lack of economic viability, the City of Sulphur Springs has announced they will not reopen their public pool this spring.

City officials declined comment on neither the announcement nor what the future holds for the venue, citing pending litigation.

According to a statement issued Monday, during the past few years pool use has continued to decline while operating and other expenses have increased. City officials feel current use of the facility would be imprudent considering the era of budget cuts and tighter spending.

Episcopal Church gets new home following closure

First United Methodist Church

COMMERCE  – The generosity of a Commerce church will allow local Episcopalians to continue to worship in town after their own church is shut down.

The lack of a full-time priest and few members was too much for the Episcopal Church of Epiphany to handle, leading to its deconsecration in January.

To the rescue was the First United Methodist Church of Commerce who, beginning Sunday, will begin a new Anglican service.

Gunman identified in Wal-Mart shooting

COMMERCE - Authorities have identified the subject who was shot and killed Sunday following a shooting outside the Commerce Wal-Mart.

29-year-old Artenio Rodriguez, of Commerce, was initially seen in Greenville firing shots into the air before a chase led to Commerce.

Rodriguez does have a criminal history in Hunt County dating back nearly a decade. It includes unlawful possession of weapon, driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

One dead in officer-involved shooting

COMMERCE – Commerce Police Department received a 911 transfer call Sunday at 12:28 p.m. from Greenville Police notifying them that a red Ford Mustang was firing shots at the Wesley Street Bridge in Greenville. Three shots were reported fired at that location, according to Commerce Public Information Officer Marty Cunningham.

Commerce Police intercepted the car at 12:33 p.m. on State Highway 24/50 just outside the city limits of Commerce. The suspect pointed a gun at Commerce officers and shots were exchanged between the two.

Former President McFarland to Serve Interim Role at TWU

COMMERCE – Former Texas A&M University-Commerce president Dr. Keith McFarland will serve as acting provost and vice president of academic affairs at Texas Woman's University beginning March 1.

The President Emeritus will take over for TWU's provost Dr. Kay Clayton, who is leaving due to health reasons and will retire in August.

Dedication ceremony for AC Williams Sunday

COMMERCE - The Commerce ISD is scheduled Sunday to hold a formal dedication ceremony and open house for the new A.C. Williams Elementary School.

The public is invited to the event, which takes place from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the site, located along Culver Street/Loop 178 across from the Commerce Middle School.

Callie Hearn, daughter of the late A. C. Williams, and Wyman Williams, chairman of the citizens committee for the construction of a new school will speak at the ceremony. Students will then give tours of the facility.
