COMMERCE – The Commerce Police Department is reporting that a 9-year-old girl has drowned at the City Swimming Pool. The incident occurred Sunday morning at approximately 7:45 a.m. while the pool was closed.
Upon arrival on scene, a girl later identified as Diamond Bronston was found at the bottom of the pool in water 13 feet deep. Commerce Firefighter Jeremy Littlefield pulled her out of the pool and CPR was immediately performed. Bronston was then transported by ambulance to Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville where she was pronounced dead.
GREENVILLE – Hundreds gathered Wednesday morning near Greenville to celebrate the birth of a rare white buffalo, now known as Lightning Medicine Cloud.
The calf was born to the herd of Arby Little Soldier, who says he chose the name because the animal was born during a thunderstorm on May 12 and as a tribute to the first known white buffalo in Texas born in 1933.
The birth of a white buffalo is an estimated one in 10 million occurrence.
COMMERCE – The State of Texas will honor three local law enforcement personnel for their heroics during last year's shooting at the Commerce Wal-Mart.
Commerce Police Lt. Terry Miller and Officer James Hildebrand, along with then Delta County Sheriff's deputy Paul Robertson, have been chosen as Medal of Valor recipients, one of the highest honors in the state.
SULPHUR SPRINGS – Due to a lack of economic viability, the City of Sulphur Springs has announced they will not reopen their public pool this spring.
City officials declined comment on neither the announcement nor what the future holds for the venue, citing pending litigation.
According to a statement issued Monday, during the past few years pool use has continued to decline while operating and other expenses have increased. City officials feel current use of the facility would be imprudent considering the era of budget cuts and tighter spending.
COMMERCE – The Commerce ISD is in the process of renovating the old A.C. Williams Elementary School to house offices for central administration, Tri County Shared Services, food service and facilities for the Boys & Girls Club.
