Last Saturday at the end of the 2017 Election Day saw a new City of Cooper Mayor following at total of 305 votes cast of the 1,205 registered voters. Darren Braddy received 139 votes (52 of those were early votes).

In a plurality election the candidate with the most votes is elected into office.

On his page Darren Braddy for Mayor of Cooper he expressed his love for this town and will rely on his 25 years of experience managing (people, budgets, etc.). He noted he wasn’t afraid of getting in and doing what needs to be done.

City of Cooper Mayor Scotty Stegall will be officially retiring on Friday, May 12, 2017 from the position he has held for the past 14 years. Mayor Stegall has been in office since 2003 when he defeated Richard Huie. He was unopposed in each election in his years holding office.

A retirement reception will be held on Friday, April 28 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at The Mill at Brew la-la. The public is invited to come by and wish Mayor Stegall best wishes in his next adventure.

The City of Cooper with a grant sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department U.S. Department of the Interior/Fish and Wildlife Services were able to do many improvements to the Big Creek Lake Park grounds.

Among the highlights of the meeting, the City of Cooper Council approved the future clean up week as April 15-22, 2017 and also to waive dump fees for Cooper Clean-Up Crew on the day they are organized and volunteer once each month.

“I suggest we waive the fees [on set days] as this benefit the whole community,” said City of Cooper Mayor Scotty Stegall. He also offered to provide trash bags. Councilwoman Donna Thomason motioned, seconded by Councilwoman JoAnn Preas to unanimously contribute to this cause.

“What does this town need?” that is the question on the minds of local officials.

The Delta County Economic Development Corporation recently announced that the City of Cooper is eligible for a Texas Department of Agriculture Community Block Grant for $350,000.00 with a five percent match.

City of Cooper Mayor Scotty Stegall officially announced April 9-16, 2016 as Clean-Up Week in Cooper. He encourages all citizens of Cooper to dispose of all trash, limbs, non functioning appliances and broken toys. He would like citizens to renew their pride in their neighborhood.  Prices will be cut in half for the dump site and brush will be free.

There is a special fund established for those who would like to donate to help beautify the Square in Cooper.

Kaywin Conley of Kay’s Korner is spearheading a movement to help beautify the Square in Cooper. She is working with the City of Cooper to reestablish the sprinkler system in order to be able to plant flowers and greenery to make the Square attractive to citizens and visitors. However this work is estimated to cost $2,000.
