Wyman

Williams, the director of development for the College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Texas A&M-Commerce, continues his endeavor of speaking to alumni groups and others about the university and its role in the A&M System.  Wyman says many do not know the state funds only about 35 percent of the costs of higher education, compared to nearly 90 percent in the 1960s.  Also, for the 125th anniversary of the University this fall, Wyman says a new "heritage line" of apparel will be announced soon.

A&M-Commerce College of Business and Entrepreneurship development director Wyman Williams is speaking to civic groups and others about the history of the University going back to Mayo College, as the 125th anniversary of the University approaches this fall.  One endeavor that has been announced is the Brick Garden Project.

Each year, the U.S. Navy Band tours throughout specified regions of the country, reaching audiences that do not generally get to see these musical ensembles perform on a regular basis. On February 19th, Commerce, Texas, will be host to the band, one of 22 cities chosen as part of this year's outreach.

In January, the Wall Street Journal published two separate pieces that took aim at "bureaucratic bloat," the questionable value of a college degree, and other presumed ills of higher education. Today, Dr. Dan Jones of Texas A&M University-Commerce offers a counterargument, one that frowns on social determinism and some specific elitist views.

A&M-Commerce president Dr. Dan Jones and Commerce mayor Dr. John Ballotti say the university and the city are doing a feasibility study of applying for a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to attract a regional medical center to Commerce.  This would be in addition to the new Hunt Memorial Hospital District facility that will be built here this year.

Last Saturday, December 28th, was the date of the funeral for legendary country and western singer, songwriter, and bandleader, Ray Price, who died at 87 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Among those who spoke at the service were radio personalities Dallas Wayne, Eddie Stubbs, and Bill Mack – who read a statement from Willie Nelson. Also asked to speak was Dr. Dan Jones of Texas A&M University-Commerce, the institution which conferred upon Price a doctorate of Humane Letters in December of 2009.

Tyler Junior College partnership announced

Texas A&M University-Commerce and Tyler Junior College have formally announced their partnership to simplify the transfer process for students transitioning from associate degree programs at Tyler Junior College into bachelor’s degree programs at A&M-Commerce. The statement came on Dec. 19.

The three-year partnership goes into effect Dec. 20, 2013, and will allow Tyler Junior College students to complete their four-year degrees through A&M-Commerce via online courses, on-campus classes or a combination of the two.

The Harding Bison rushed for 297 yards and scored three times in the third quarter and rolled to a 44-3 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce in the inaugural Live United Texarkana Bowl on Friday at Razorback Stadium.
 
The game was the first postseason appearance for the Lions since 1995, but cold temperatures and a steady rain did not help the Lion (7-5) offense, who completed just seven of its 37 passes and finished with just 100 total yards on the night. Meanwhile, the Bison (9-2) showed little ill effects from the weather, racking up 504 total yards.
 

Navarro College victors in B.V. Bowl

Temperatures at Merrill Green Stadium may have felt like the Ice Bowl, but the

ending was enough to make many forget about numb noses. With just ten seconds

remaining on the game clock, Navarro College made one final plunge into the end

zone to defeat Hinds Community College and take home the Brazos Valley Bowl

trophy.

Lions to play in Texarkana Bowl on Dec. 7

The Texas A&M University-Commerce football team, coming off its first winning season (7-4) in 12 years under new head coach Colby Carthel, has qualified for a postseason bowl game.

The Lions will face Harding University of Searcy, Ark., in the inaugural Live United Texarkana Bowl. The game will be played at noon on Sat., Dec. 7 at Razorback Stadium in Texarkana, Ark. Profits made above the expenses will benefit the United Way of Texarkana.

Ben and Jerry bring sweetness to Mayo Speaker Series

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream spoke at Ferguson Auditorium at Texas A&M University-Commerce on November 12 as part of the William L. Mayo Prestigious Speaker Series.

 

Ben and Jerry shared with students the story of how their iconic company began. They were born in Brooklyn, NY four days apart from each other. They met in junior high school in Merrick, Long Island and remained close friends through their graduation at Calhoun High School. In 1977, they reunited and started a food business together.
