Texas Parks and Wildlife help increase the population of the Eastern turkey.

The Eastern Turkey was once numerous in East Texas. But rapid changes in habitat caused the population to quickly decline.

Draining boats after use on Texas lakes is more than just a good idea – effective today, it’s state law.

The new regulation is part of Texas’ ongoing effort to stop the spread of zebra mussels. The invasive creatures have been slowed, but not stopped, in their progress into Texas waters.

Zebra mussels entered the United States through the Great Lakes in 1988. They have been spreading across the continent mainly though the transfer of waters containing developing mussels, which are invisible to the naked eye. The mussels were first identified in Texas in 2009.

Financial problems have compelled the closing of the Cooper Lake Center in Hopkins County. A few light poles remain in an abandoned parking lot where bluegrass concerts and other events were held.

The South Sulphur Regional Development Association, sponsor of the Cooper Lake Center since the mid-1990s, has said it decided to close the facility for financial reasons.

The center, occupying former farm land on County Road 4777, has depended almost entirely on private donations.
